Climate Aid Campaign

GOALS & OBJECTIVES

SAVE THE MISSION OF THE EPA

OUR GOALS & objectives:

Global Warming due to anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is changing our climate, causing great harm to humanity and the environment, including species extinction. That was the principal conclusion of the 2009 Endangerment Finding based on a literature review of decades of sound, peer-reviewed climate science.
review the 2009 endangerment finding
The Trump administration is now proposing to rescind the 2009 Endangerment Finding and 30 EPA "rulings" that regulate harmful GHG emissions.

Decades of legislative actions to establish public policies to protect our health and our environment are at risk.

Global Warming is an "Existential Crisis" for humanity and many species that are a vital part of a healthy planetary ecosystem. It is "highly probable" that by the end of the 21st Century, many of the common species that are integral to the healthy functioning of the ecosystem services on which we depend for clean air, fresh water, and edible crops will go extinct.

According to the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), an estimated one million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction. How much is climate change to blame? As of 2024, it threatens over 14,000 species on the IUCN Red List, and projections suggest that if global temperatures increase by 2°C by 2100, about 18% of all species on land will face a high risk of extinction. More sensitive animals will fare even worse, with over 30% of insect pollinators and salamanders facing high risks in this projection.

We must reverse this trend towards massive species extension!

Our goals are fourfold:

(IN ORDER OF IMMEDIATE PRIORITY)
  • GOAL #1: Inform the general public about the 2009 Endangerment Finding and the intent of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to rescind the Finding and associated rulings on GHG emissions.
Reference: EPA New Source Review (NSR) Permitting
Objective #1: To disseminate information in print media (Climate Aid, the Journal) and through various online platforms to educate the general public about the 2009 Endangerment Finding, the intent of the EPA to rescind the Finding and associated rulings on GHG emissions, and to provide analyses on the social, economic, and environmental impacts of deregulating GHG emissions.  Expected Outcomes: An informed public with the knowledge and capacity to take action to restore the authority of the EPA to regulate GHG emissions.

Objective #2: To sponsor education-based public forums (including a university-based national informational tour) on the 2009 E
ndangerment Finding and associated rulings on GHG emissions, featuring expert witness testimony on the impacts of GHGs on society, economy, and the environment. Expected Outcomes: Increased community-centered response to GHG emissions deregulation.

Objective #3: To improve the social infrastructure to respond to climate change impacts through support of public policy on GHG emissions regulations, and community resilience and adaptation to the negative impacts of global warming. Expected Outcomes: Established network of education- and community-based chapters of the Renewable Nations Institute with the mission to inform the public on the social, economic, and environmental impacts of global warming, and support community stakeholders to take action to mitigate climate change in their communities.
  • GOAL #2: Permanently restore the Mission of the EPA to "Protect Human Health and the Environment" by codifying the 2009 Endangerment Finding in the U.S. Constitution.

Objective #1: To collaborate with current and past petitioners --- including but not limited to: the states of California, Connecticut, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington; the cities of New York, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.; the territory of American Samoa; and the Center for Biological Diversity, Center for Food Safety, Conservation Law Foundation, Environmental Advocates, Environmental Defense, Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, International Center for Technology Assessment, National Environmental Trust, Natural Resources Defense Council, Sierra Club, Union of Concerned Scientists, and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group --- to stop the EPA from rescinding the 2009 Endangerment Finding. Expected Outcome: Reverse the anticipated EPA ruling to rescind the 2009 Endangerment Finding and restore the authority of the EPA to regulate GHG emissions.

Objective #2: To support
current and past petitioners who are undertaking a national petition drive to permanently restore the Mission of the EPA to "Protect Human Health and the Environment" by codifying the 2009 Endangerment Finding in the U.S. Constitution. Expected Outcomes: The U.S. Congress enacting veto-proof legislation to codify the 2009 Endangerment Finding in the U.S. Constitution, ratified by a minimum of 39 states.
  • GOAL #3: Codify the "Human Right to a Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment" in the U.S. Constitution in alignment with the United Nations and 62 signatory countries.

Objective #1: To collaborate with current and past petitioners (see Goal#2, Objective #1) to support stakeholder petition drives to codify the "Human Right to a Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment" in the U.S. Constitution in alignment with the United Nations and 62 signatory countries.  Expected Outcomes: The U.S. Congress enacting veto-proof legislation to codify the "Human Right to a Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment" in the U.S. Constitution, ratified by a minimum of 39 states.

Human Right to a Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment
In July 2022, the United Nations welcomed the recognition by the General Assembly that a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment is a human right. This recognition followed the UN Human Rights Council resolution 48/13 which acknowledged the right in October 2021. These resolutions represent a landmark achievement in mobilizing to protect the human right to a healthy environment and the interdependent and indivisible human rights which depend on it. Recognition of the right to a healthy environment empowers all people with a critical tool to hold their governments, big polluters and all those responsible for environmental harm to account.

  • GOAL #4: Conduct the "Climate Aid" national capital campaign to support the successful implementation of Goals #1 - #3.
Objective #1: To collaborate with current and past petitioners to drive a national "Climate Aid" capital campaign supporting stakeholder petition drives to: (1) Inform the general public about the 2009 Endangerment Finding and the intent of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to rescind the Finding and associated rulings on GHG emissions; (2) Permanently restore the Mission of the EPA to "Protect Human Health and the Environment" by codifying the 2009 Endangerment Finding in the U.S. Constitution; and (3) codify the "Human Right to a Clean, Healthy, and Sustainable Environment" in the U.S. Constitution in alignment with the United Nations and 62 signatory countries, as expressed in the Goals and Objectives stated above.  Expected Outcomes: Secure up to $5 million annually in charitable contributions shared among petitioners to achieve the Goals and Objectives as stated above.
